Top U.S. Senate Mortgage Aide Joins Amerifirst Home Mortgage

Amerifirst Home Mortgage announced that Matt Jones has joined the company as Senior Advisor – Capital Markets.

In his new role with Amerifirst, Jones will advise on capital markets strategy and execution and lead the company’s government affairs efforts. Before joining Amerifirst, he served as Senior Counsel to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and previously as Senior Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Washington, D.C. In this capacity, he advised Senate Republicans on housing and mortgage policy and played a key role in drafting several pieces of legislation that became law. Most notably, he was the principal drafter and negotiator of the mortgage forbearance program enacted in the CARES Act. Prior to his service in the Senate, Jones worked in residential policy for the Mortgage Bankers Association.

“Matt Jones really set the bar high when it comes to what it means to be a Rising Star,” said Brena Nath, HW + Managing Editor, in the June 1 issue of HousingWire Magazine. “His list of accomplishments includes being the principal drafter of the mortgage forbearance program enacted through the CARES Act, which reshaped the mortgage industry and enabled more than 4 million homeowners to hit the pause button on their mortgage.

“But it’s not simply his monumental role in creating housing relief during the COVID-19 pandemic that makes him a Rising Star, it’s also everything he did leading up to that moment that truly makes him an exemplary young influencer in the housing sector. It’s this same willpower, steadfastness and determination to push through adversity that defines this year’s winners.”

“During his time in DC, Matt has cultivated personal relationships with top lawmakers, agency heads, GSE leadership, and industry leaders – relationships that will ensure we maintain a seat at the table with some of the largest companies in our industry,” said Dave Gahm, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Amerifirst Home Mortgage. “And that’s important as we grow our footprint and continue advocating for programs that offer affordable housing and lending options for millions of Americans in communities across the country. We are tremendously excited to see the positive impact that someone of his caliber and experience will have on the organization and the housing industry.”

Jones holds a Bachelor of Arts, with distinction, from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center. He is licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan and is an NMLS-licensed loan originator. Jones is based in the Kalamazoo corporate headquarters.
