Gabe Abshire, CEO and founder of Move Concierge, talked to our editors about the company’s history, the company’s future and where he sees the U.S. mortgage market.
QUESTION: Move Concierge just turned 16. Can you reflect on that journey?
GABE ABSHIRE: Sixteen years ago, I had an idea that seemed obvious to me but didn’t exist anywhere in the market. When people bought or sold a home, they were left to figure out all their utility connections, internet setup, and home services on their own. It was a nightmare that took days to sort out, and frankly, it was a missed opportunity for every lender and real estate professional who worked so hard to get their clients to closing.
So, in 2009, I created Move Concierge. Not just a company – but an entire industry that didn’t exist before.
Looking back now, it’s incredibly rewarding to see what we built from scratch. But let me be honest – it wasn’t easy. There were many struggles trying to get this industry off the ground. The biggest challenge was building partner relationships and earning trust with real estate professionals who had never seen anything like what we were offering. We had to prove that we could deliver on our promises while creating something completely new.
QUESTION: What do you see as your company’s core differentiator?
GABE ABSHIRE: What started as an idea has grown into a company culture built on core values, with one that stands out above all others: delivering mind-blowing customer experiences. We’ve spent 16 years changing the way people think about moving, creating the modern way to move through experiences that truly wow our customers while building an environment where great people can do their best work.
Today, we’re helping 300,000 families move seamlessly every year. But here’s the thing – we’re just getting started.
QUESTION: What’s next for the company?
GABE ABSHIRE: This summer, we’re launching our game-changing platform that will transform what used to take customers 2 half days or one full day into a 5-minute home service setup experience. This isn’t just an incremental improvement – it’s the fastest, most efficient moving experience in the industry.
We’ve also made strategic investments in our leadership team, bringing on a president with over 30 years of technology, customer experience, real estate, and high growth experience. This positions us to scale aggressively. When you’re building something this big, you need people around you who have been there before.
Our growth trajectory is explosive – we’re targeting 500,000 movers annually by 2028, backed by diversified lead sources and enhanced partnerships across mortgage, insurance, title, and real estate.
But here’s what I’m most excited about: our Concierge for Life vision. We’re moving beyond just the move itself to become customers’ lifetime home service partner. Then – and this is the key part – we’re giving that relationship back to our referral partners. We want to keep lenders and real estate professionals connected with their customers for life.
Think about it: you work incredibly hard to build relationships with your clients, help them through one of the biggest transactions of their lives, and then what? You hope they remember you when it’s time to move again or refer someone else.
We’re changing that. When we become someone’s concierge for life, we’re keeping you in front of them. Every interaction they have with us reinforces your relationship with them.
QUESTION: We’re in a very challenging mortgage market. Where do you see opportunities for business growth?
GABE ABSHIRE: There are 5 million people moving every year in this country. We’re helping 300,000 of them now, which means there’s massive opportunity ahead. As mortgage rates start to come down and the market picks back up, we’re positioned to capture that growth while continuing to deliver the mind-blowing experiences our industry has come to expect from us.
Building an industry from scratch taught me that the biggest opportunities come from solving problems that everyone accepts as “just the way things are.” Sixteen years ago, the chaos of moving was just accepted. Today, we’ve proven there’s a better way.
The next 16 years are going to be even more exciting.
