New data released from real estate data solutions provider Benutech reveals that between January 2025 and January 2026, the nation’s mortgage servicers filed more than 808,000 foreclosure-related documents, signaling a year of growing volatility for American families.

ATTOM released its first-quarter 2026 Vacant Property and Zombie Foreclosure Report showing that 1.33 percent of the residential properties in the United States, or nearly 1.4 million homes, were vacant at the beginning of the year. That was essentially the same rate as the 1.32 percent rate posted in the previous quarter and in the first quarter of 2025.

ATTOM released its Year-End 2025 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report, which shows foreclosure filings — default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions — were reported on 367,460 U.S. properties in 2025, up 14 percent from 2024 and up 3 percent from 2023 but down 25 percent from 2019, before pandemic-related disruptions altered housing market dynamics. Foreclosure filings in 2025 were also down 87 percent from a peak of nearly 2.9 million in 2010.

ATTOM released its January 2025 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report, which shows there were a total of 30,816 U.S. properties with foreclosure filings — default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions – up 8 percent from the prior month but down 7 percent from a year ago.
