CHLA Writes House Veterans Affairs Committee To Oppose Proposed VA Mortgage Fee Hikes

The Community Home Lenders of America (CHLA) sent a letter to the House Veterans Affairs Committee, on the eve of a committee markup of H.R. 6047 – opposing proposed VA mortgage fee hikes proposed in the bill as an offset to fund other veterans benefits.

” The Community Home Lenders of America (CHLA) is writing to express our opposition to a proposed increase in mortgage fees for veterans and active-duty personnel, who access their earned benefit VA mortgages,”  the CHLA letter states.

The CHLA letter singled out proposed VA mortgage fee hikes of 30 basis points for a first-use VA mortgage and 100 basis points for a subsequent-use VA mortgage as the most prominent areas of concern.  The letter supported the increases in benefits and expressed sympathy for the fact that the committee operates under pay-go rules – but asked the Committee to consider alternatives, concluding that:

” Therefore, as the Committee begins a markup of this bill, CHLA asks the Committee to either look elsewhere for budget offsets or waive pay-go rules that require this type of budget offset.”

CHLA has consistently and publicly opposed the use of VA mortgage fee hikes not based on actuarial considerations to pay for non-housing spending, including in an April 2025 Letter opposing any VA mortgage fee hikes in last year’s Reconciliation bill and a 2022 Letter asking the Committee to let Blue Water Navy mortgage fees expire.
